The Ipod can indeed be used as a mass storage device,when you plug it in through the given USB,Open Up My Computer and there must be a new drive Icon signifying your Ipod,Just open this and put all your non-music file in there and ta da,your ipod is now a mass storage device,if by chance this still does give you problems Shut Down Itunes Completely and do the same.
I am very doubtful if the Mp3 you do put on the Ipod using the MSD technique will be realised at all by the Ipod,that is why the Propriety Itunes is soo required.
Unless you plan on changing your Mp3 player , you'll have to use the Itunes for transferring music.
