Step 1

Turn water off at mains meter, then open leaking tap as far as it goes.

Step 2

On conventional taps, unscrew covering shield. If using multi-grip pliers, pad jaws with rag to avoid damaging the shield. Slide shield up handle to expose a nut on tap body.

Undo nut (Fig.1) and lift out whole upper part of tap, then remove spindle or "jumper valve" which carries the washer (Fig.2).

Step 3

For taps with coloured indicator buttons, these either screw or clip in to the handle. Remove button, undo screw beneath, and lift off the handle (Fig.3).

Step 4

Prise off spring retainer and remove special metal plate. The spindle can then be unscrewed (Fig.4).

Step 5

To replace old washer, undo nut or screw holding it onto the jumper valve and put on new washer. Or use a new jumper valve with washer already attached. Replace tap assembly in reverse order.

Follow directions carefully. Consult a qualified tradesman in case of doubt. Mitre 10 (including the authors of this advice and Mitre 10's owners and proprietors) is not liable in respect of anything done, or omitted to be done, consequent upon the whole or part of this advice.
