Tying the fabric

Dying the fabric

What a fashionable pet!

What you need

There are several ways to achieve a tie-dye look. But the basic idea is that you tie up a part of the fabric so that when you dip it into the dye the part that is bound will not absorb the colour. So you can use string, wool, clothes pegs or anything else that stops the dye. For this bandana we’ll keep it simple and use rubber bands:

  • Old newspaper or a plastic sheet to protect your work surface.
  • Rubber gloves (to protect hands from dyes).
  • A square piece of white or (light coloured) fabric preferably 100% natural fibres as it is easier to dye.
  • Elastic bands.
  • Cold-water dye (make sure the dye you use is suitable for the fabric) in two colours ?say red and blue if you want to end up with a purple bandana.
  • And a bowl large enough to hold 1.5 litres of water.

What you do

  • Take the square fabric piece, randomly bunch small areas and bind them with elastic bands.
  • Wearing gloves, submerge the fabric in the red dye (following instructions as to how long etc.
  • Take out and allow to dry (without removing bands).
  • When dry, add more rubber bands to other areas.
  • Place in blue dye this time.
  • Take out and allow to dry.
  • Remove all rubber bands (this will reveal a purple fabric square with patterns/rings in white and red).
  • You might want to iron it into a triangle before testing it on your pet dog. And don’t tie it too tight!
