how to draw a dolphin

What you need

• paper;
  
• chalks;
  
• a flat surface to draw on, ie, kitchen table, etc.

What you do

• Decide what you're going to draw;
  
• This time, try drawing a dolphin;
  
• The first shape is a sausage or a jelly bean if you like. You start with a simple curve across the top. At each end of that curve you make another one, slightly tinier. Now we join them up with another curve that’s parallel to the first. Now, while we’re doing curves we start with one from the bottom going down like that, then another one from the top down towards it almost to a point;
  
• Now we come back to the front of the dolphin and it’s like a ‘J' shape from bottom at the front - the nose. We come off the bottom we go round and back into the front, around and back in, beautiful, beautiful;
  
• Now we finish off the tail, a couple of curves one on each side and then make a little dot - then join that up to the tips with a double curve like a stretched out 's' - in and up then back to the other tip;
  
• Then the fins - now you’ve got that 's' shape down part - we’ll use that for the mouth starting with the smile, go down then across to the front. And just above the end of the mouth a little curve like that, and on top of that little curve a circle for the eye;
  
• Fantastic, OK now we’re ready for colour. When you think of dolphins you think of grey don’t you? That sort of grey blue, so put some of that on, holding the chalk on the side so you’re going to get quite a lot on, the body of that colour. Don’t worry about going out to the edges because with chalks you can spread it out with you fingers, so put heaps of it on and some of these lines are guidelines and you’re going to go right over;
  
• Starting up the top with the white, just put a blob of white like that. Ok, now with your finger tips altogether just spread it down toward the dolphin. Using a fine edge of the chalk just start with a cross like that, then another cross over that one. Now just with your finger tip, spread it out in each direction.
